Upon meeting the Rainbow Sage in Notre Sagesse, the Sage performed a ritual that prepared Yato for when she would meet another hero of darkness, who turned out to be her younger brother Leo, wielder of the divine tome Brynhildr in the city of Cyrkensia a little while later. Yato and Brynhildr resonated with each other, and the sword was empowered, transforming into its present form of Grim Yato.
When wielded by Corrin, Grim Yato boosts her physical and magical defenses, allowing her to better protect those she cares about. It is also capable of being summoned to her hand from short distances (less than thirty feet away).
